Surf

Do you offer surf lessons?

We don’t give surf lessons ourselves since there are plenty of local surf schools with great, qualified teachers in Weligama so we recommend to take surf lessons there. No need to book in advance.

If you are a more advanced surfer we can offer guided surfs. Then you’ll be taken out to all the different spots, suited for the conditions and your preference. Please contact us with your surf experience and what you would like to achieve when you’re at Basecamp.

When is the best months for surfing here

If you are a beginner, it doesn’t matter which time of the year you come to Basecamp. However, there is a difference between the seasons. In high season (november – april) you can surf at about 10 – 12 different surf spots: from Weligama beach, which is perfect for beginners, to Rams which is a reefbreak for advanced surfers.

In low season (may – oct) the surfbreak at Taprobane Island works, which is a few minutes walking distance from us. It’s also still possible to surf at the main beach and at Fisho’s, the break right in front of Basecamp. It’s far less busy around this time a year which is great for practicing.

When you are more advanced it is very fun to come during low season. Less crowded in the lineup and enough waves, usually the swell is a bit bigger too. During high season there is more variety for the advanced surfers. In high season there will be about 10 – 12 sport working within 30 minutes tuk tuk drive from Basecamp.

Fisho’s, a beginner to intermediate reef break right in front of Basecamp, works most of the year too! So, in our opinion there is no off-season for surfing!

Other

What is the best way to get to Basecamp from the airport.

Bus: If you decide to take the bus, you can take the highway bus to Matara or Galle. The highway bus only goes a few times a day, you can check the schedule online but is not always reliable. From Matara or Galle to Basecamp you can take a local bus or tuk tuk. This will take around 4 hours in total. If there is no highway bus at the airport you can take the bus to Colombo first and try to get on the highway bus from there. These busses go every hour. It will take you an hour longer than the first option. The last bus option is to take a local (express) bus all the way but since that takes about 6 hours we don’t recommend to do so.

Train: You have to take a bus/tuk tuk/taxi to Colombo Fort first. The train goes 4 or 5 times a day so please check the schedule before online (check it at the government website, that’s reliable www.railway.gov.lk). From Weligama train station you can take a tuk tuk to Basecamp. If your bus and train are connecting it will take around 4,5 hours.

Taxi: In case you don’t feel like traveling by public transport. We can always arrange a airport pick up. It takes about 2,5 hours and costs 12000 lkr. Contact us at basecampsrilanka@gmail.com and let us know your flight details and whether you are traveling with any special luggage (surfboard).

How is the weather throughout the season

Year round it is around 30 degrees and very sunny. However, the forecast always says otherwise, and will probably say it’s raining 364 days out of 365, but that’s never accurate.  Make sure to bring enough sunscreen and beachwear.

There’s also a few misconceptions attached to the monsoon season. Monsoon season is from April until October. It does not mean bad weather with rain, onshore winds and un-surfable waves. As a matter of fact, one can surf and travel all year round in the South.

The most chance of heavy rain showers is in May, beginning of June and November when the monsoon changes. Otherwise, there will be a few random rain showers during the day helping you cool down in the hot tropical climate.

It is always difficult to predict the weather on a tropical island but this is the closest we get, and we can recommend travelling to the South Coast all year round.

What is there to do around?

Weligama is a small surfers village at the South Coast of Sri Lanka. It has a perfect centered location between Matara and Galle. We can recommend you the best places around and organize your trips.
